good friends

a couple of months ago
my friend moe
gave me a rubber tree,
and after a week i started to neglect it,
but those plants
they don't
require much attention.
you can forget about them.
they're like a good friend; you can
not pay them much attention,
but when you see them again,
they'll still be green
like you
never left.

love this guy

blindness

ack, i have been incredibly busy lately and thus, severely lacking in the posts department. also lacking in my posts about recent good reads! so, here is one to satisfy your written word woos.

it took me quite a while to read but blindness by jose saramago was no easy read. the run on sentences of a peculiar style which is unique to saramago are at times hard to follow if you are not 100% dedicated to the words at hand - i find myself quite often daydreaming while reading and have to reread entire pages sometimes!

however, the subject matter and the plot help to keep one interested. for those of you who don't know blindness is the story about a pandemic of well, blindness that sweeps the nation? [one is never really sure after reading the book.] the tale of how it all begins and how the characters cope with it. a story that makes you appreciate your sight, and makes you think about certain things in a whole new way.
note: 'If you can see, look. If you can look, observe.'

there were numerous times throughout this novel where i had to physically stop to appreciate the beauty of the words saramago put down.

'I shall clean whatever is still dirty, and now to work, let's go, we are the only woman in the world with two eyes and six hands. Perhaps in the building opposite, behind those closed windows some blind people, men, women, roused by the noise of the constant beating of the rain, with their head pressed against the cold window-panes covering with their breath on the glass the dullness of the night, remember the time when, like now, they last saw the rain falling from the sky. They cannot imagine that there are moreover three naked women out there, as naked as when they came into the world, they seem to be mad, they must be bad, people in their right mind do not start washing on a balcony exposed to the view of the neighborhood, even less looking like that, what does it matter that we are all blind, these are things one must not do, my god, how the rain is pouring down on them, how it trickles between their breasts, how it lingers and disappears into the darkness of the pubis, how it finally drenches and flows over the thighs, perhaps we have judged them wrongly, or perhaps we are unable to see this the most beautiful and glorious thing that has happened in the history of the city, a sheet of foam flows from the floor of the balcony, if only i could go with it, falling interminably, clean, purified, naked. Only god see us, said the wife of the first blind man, who despite disappointments and setbacks, clings to the belief that god is not blind, to which the doctor's wife replies, Not even he, the sky is clouded over.'

it was also made into a hollywood blockbuster but i promised myself to read it before seeing it - so that is my next step!

comrags

another item that had previously been made fun of has found a spot in my heart. a vintage comrags wrap skirt - my mother's first 'designer' purchase back in the early 80's - snagged for my own closet. it's a heavy beautifully woven cotton - the perfect winter skirt! paired with a leather biker jacket and chunky black scarf for outdoor travels!

comrags is all about "wearable" , tailored designer fashion... and as fun as it is to look through ridiculous, crazy or wymsical fashion collections.. sometimes it's nice to see one where i'm like, "hey, i'd wear that.' ah, and they're 100% canadian to boot!

so: from their new AW'11 collection..a few of my favourites [humphrey vest is fav!]

the nana jacket

i always loved this jacket, but never got around to stealing it from my nana while i lived there in highschool. thankfully, i didn't have to because she offered it to me the other day after knowing i had my eye on it. this jacket's been around since god knows when, 70s? and came with a hideous orange pin stripped skirt. i ditched the skirt, and kept the kinda 80s grunge military style coat.

beau chapeau

if you keep your stuff around long enough you are bound to love it once more! a hat that for many years was the laughing stock of the family, has been rediscovered by yours truly, and i am in love! gap straw bowler hat circa 1993. actually an interesting topic; i will actually do another post sometime with old items that have been 'rediscovered'!

grey cotton tee - gap, black petticoat - aa, silver heart neclace - gift from portugal, & although not much of a brightly coloured nail polish kind of girl.. this neon orange milano nail lacquer  from lawtons goes on quite thin, and is matte! how cool!

aquatic love

making a quick note to welcome a few new additions to the fam!

meet: tupac, biggie, mj, and the extremely elegant ernest [unintentionally named, but it stuck.]

before heading out of province for school, i pawned my fish tank off on two dear friends. after two years i am now back in halifax and i have to say, it is so nice to have the tank back at my side! it is sitting in the corner of my bedroom on an old white trunk and is really quite soothing to fall asleep to. and in fact, maybe a little too mesmerizing at times.

currently, the count is at 6 fishies and it is quickly going up! oh, the lucky devils, they even have a medieval castle to camp out in.

i guess my love for fishes doesn't stop there. i accidentally found myself with a collection of fish necklaces one day.
top left: hand carved wood fish from tobago keys
top right: japanese/chinese? fish pendant
bottom left: hand carved from nut shell, from grenada
bottom right: gift, silver fish pendant from portugal

although my fish jewelry collection is quite sufficient, there is always room for more!

i really love this origami fish necklace from origami bijou.

this abalone and sterling silver fish from yukonron in etsy is quite fantastic as well!
